Seafood Festival - Oct 16th (Saturday)

Winds Parents and Students,
Here is the most updated information about the Seafood Festival I have so far.

There will be no Winds practice on Thursday because of the Homecoming Street Dance at the Middle School.

We will have a trailer to transport all of the percussion equiptment and larger instruments over to JF Gregory park.  We will begin loading the equiptment on the trailer at the band room at 10:30 Saturday morning.  I am asking that all percussion students arrive at 10:30 to assist.  Students playing the larger brass instruments or other instruments stored at the school will please arrive at the band room by 11 to make sure your personal instrument is loaded on the trailer.  We will also be loading chairs.

All other Winds students are to meet at the stage at JF Gregory Park at 11:30.  All students are to wear their Winds t-shirt from this year with jeans.  Please bring a portable music stand and your music in the binder.  I will bring clothes pins in case of wind.  Last year the stage was located at the far end of the pavillion.  All students will help set up and tear down the stage and equiptment.  Many hands make light work.  The Winds are scheduled to play from 12:30 to 1.  We will need help back at the bandroom to unload the trailer as well about 1:30.

Unfortunately, all students will need to get themselves to and from the park.  Please be aware this is a busy event in Richmond Hill and you may need to allow for extra time to park and get to the venue.  There is a charge at the gate.  Parents must pay to enter, performers do not.  Please keep that in mind when leaving the park.  They will charge you to re-enter.  If you are able to stay, this may be the day to do it since you have already paid.

If you have a truck and could assist with loading the trailer and can carry any extra equiptment in your vehicle, please email me.

I am looking forward to hearing the Winds play.

Winds Update

Parents,
Sorry for the late notice.  Could you please have your son or daughter wear the Wildcat Winds tshirt they received at the beginning of this year to school and/or practice tomorrow?  The contest that Christina Smith entered to win the shirts is having a photo contest of the kids wearing the shirts.  The prize is $100 donated to the Winds program.  I hope you can help.

Next, Winds practice is cancelled for Thursday.  Doc and the eighth graders will be busy with the Homecoming parade.

Finally, the Winds will perform on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Seafood Festival in JF Gregory Park.  The performance time is around noon.  We will meet at the band room to load up the percussion equiptment and large instruments before that.  I will get a definate time for both from Doc.  We will not be providing transportation to the park.  Those students attending will need to be transported by their parents.

This should bring us up to date for this week.  If you are still interested in attending the GMEA concert in January, please email me by tomorrow at 8a.m.  Thank you.

What's Up in Band 9/27 to 10/1

Parents,

Attached are the minutes from our Band Booster meeting in September.  Please read over the minutes for the latest information.  Our next meeting is October 14 at 7 p.m. in the bandroom.

This week is a little different than usual due to Homecoming at the High School.  Please read it over carefully.

Monday- 3-4:30 Practice for all 8th graders wanting to march with the HS marching band in the Homecoming parade on Thursday.  Regular tutoring is cancelled for this week only.
Tuesday- 3-5 Winds practice
Wednesday- 3-4:30 Pep Band practice
Thursday- 3-5 Winds practice.  Please check back through the week as Thursday approaches to see if anything changes with this.  Eighth graders marching in the parade will be reporting to the parade start around 5:30.  I will update you on the definate meeting place and time as that information is made available to me.  The parade starts at 6p.m. on Timber Trail at the Rec Center.  It proceeds down Timber Trail to Harris Trail and then ends at the High School.  Parents can watch the parade on both sides of Timber Trail, or just on the school side of Harris Trail.  Details were published in the last Bryan County Now.
Friday-  Eighth graders at the Football game with the marching band?  TBD

If you have an eighth grader I hope you let them participate in the parade with the High School band.  I was a wonderful experience for my daughter and her friends last year.  It went a long way to encouraging these kids to stick with band in high school.

Lastly, if you have emailed me in the afternoon and not gotten a response in the same day it is because I read emails for band in the morning.  My schedule is too crazy in the evening to add band business to it.  I hope you understand.  Please, please, please, call me at home 727-2710 or on my cell 332-6148 if you need an immediate answer about a performance or practice.  I am happy to answer your questions, I'm just not at my computer.

I will be updating this schedule as the week goes on.  What a week it will be.

Atlanta Trip Spring 2011

Parents,

I'm truly not trying to drive you nuts, but I wanted to put forward an opportunity from the Booster Officers.

For the last 3 or 4 years the Wildcat Winds have performed at the Dixie Classic Festival in Atlanta the spring.  This is a wonderful event, but is also our costliest event during the school year.  Last year this trip cost over $100 per student.  We broke the payments into 2 installments.

This year, Booster officers would like to offer that if you would like to start paying on the Atlanta trip beginning in October, we will be setting up a spreadsheet to keep track of your payments and "account" balance.  If you paid $20/month from now until February (this is when many of the final payments come due), your students trip would be nearly paid off.  As the actual cost of the trip comes into focus we will inform you of the balance due.

This is absolutely voluntary.  We just thought breaking the payments into more manageable chunks would be helpful for many families.  If you choose to participate you will receive a statement of total payments received monthly. We will not send you a "bill" every month.  You can pay as you are able.  As stated above, we won't have a final balance due until the details of hotel expense, etc. can be determined.

Again, participation in this payment plan is entirely up to you.  Only you know what works best for your family.  Should you choose to participate, please put your payment in an envelope marked with your student's name and "Atlanta Trip".  By October 1 we should have a payment drop box in Doc's office for all money collection.

Thank you for your time,

Kiersten

From the desk of Dr. Warnock

Winds Parents,

Dr. Warnock wanted me to give you a heads up on a few things.

First, Mrs. Herndon and Mr. Oliver have asked that the Winds play at the BOE meeting this Thursday, Sept. 23.  Winds practice on Thursday will go until 4:30.  You may pick your child up then so they can eat dinner and change and then report back to the bandroom at 5:50.  Since we don't have uniforms yet, could you please have your child wear the standard band uniform of white dress shirt, black dress pants and black dress shoes?  If you do not have these specific items, please come dressed as close to this as possible.  Please, just no t-shirts, jeans or tennis shoes.  The Winds will perform from 6:15 until 6:30 at the BOE meeting and then they will be released to go home.  Thank you for making the effort to make this performance.

Second,  Doc needs a list of interested parents who wish to attend  the GMEA conference performance at the end of January.  We need you to respond whether you are willing to chaperone OR just attend the performance.  It costs nothing to go to the concert, but you will need a pass to attend.  This event occurs during the school day on Thursday, January 27, 2011.  The students will leave RHMS at about 8 a.m., perform at 11:15, eat lunch and return back to school by the end of the school day.  If you are interested in attending and/or chaperoning, could you please email me at this address by next Friday, Sept. 24?

Lastly is something for your consideration.  Dr. Warnock has tenetively scheduled a clinician to work with the band on Sat. Nov 13 from 9-1.  That is the Saturday of the long Veteran's Day weekend.  I would like to get your feedback on whether your student will even be available to participate that day before we make a final decision.

Thank you,
Kiersten

Honor Band/ All-State Band

Parents,

One final reminder:  If your student wishes to audition for District I Honor Band/All-State band on December 4, 2010 they need to sign up with Dr. Warnock and pay the audition fee by this Friday, Sept. 17.  Please send your payment in an envelope marked with "Honor Band" or "Honor Band/All-State".

This is a voluntary audition.  The auditions for both Honor Band and the first-round audition for All-State Band is done at the same time on Dec. 4.  The cost for only Honor Band consideration is $5.  If your student wishes to be considered for All-State as well, the fee is $23 total.  Should your student be selected for the second round of All-State auditions, there will be an additional fee for that audition.  Those auditions will be held at the beginning of January and that money will be collected then (amount TBD).

The Honor Band performs at AASU in February.  The students that make Honor band have a 3 day experience of practicing with other top students in District I under a guest conductor.  After three days of practice, they put on a performance at AASU for their parents and educators.  It was a great concert last year.  I assume All-State runs much the same way, just at the state level.  I do not know where those concerts are.  I believe they take place sometime in March.

I know this is alot of information, but I hope it was helpful.

RHMS Band What's Up this week

Parents,

Thank you to all of you who attended the meeting on Thursday.  We will be posting the minutes from that meeting soon.

A special "thank you" to Kevin and Kim Caleca.  Kevin has been reshaping and repainting the music stands in the bandroom.  I can't tell the difference between the stands Kevin has refurbished and the new ones that just arrived.  Kim schlepps those stands to and from every Friday and Monday.  Your hard work is so appreciated.  I'm so sorry I forgot to mention your efforts at the meeting.

All students that are interested in auditioning for District I Honor/All-State band need to sign up ASAP with Dr. Warnock and pay the corresponding audition fee.  Auditions will be held on December 4, 2010 (location TBD).  If your student is ONLY auditioning for the Honor Band the fee is $5.  If your student is auditioning for Honor & All-State Band their audition fee is $23.  Please put cash payment in an envelope labeled with your students name and what it is for.  Please make checks payable to RHWBB.

The schedule is as follows this week:
Monday- tutoring
Tues.- Wildcat Winds
Wed.- Pep Band and Football game
Thurs.- Winds

We need all money for Pep Band shirts and Winds Uniforms THIS WEEK!  If you need to discuss payment, please email Barb Smith at rhwbb_pres@yahoo.com

RHMS Band Info

Parents,
If you are trying to hunt down the pieces to your child's uniform one parent has had luck on the Land's End website.  They have black skirts/pants and collared shirts for girls (which can be hard to track down).  I know they have items for boys as well.  Just wanted to pass on the information.
The Pep band will be playing at the middle school football game this Wednesday 9/1 after school.  Please have your student wear their pep band shirt from last year with jeans/jean walking shorts.  If your student doesn't have a pep band shirt yet, please have them wear a school appropriate black, gold or white tshirt.   We are still in the process of collecting money ($10) and getting the shirts made for this year.  Your child will be provided an afterschool snack and will need to be picked up at 6:30.  If you can help donate snack or chaperone the band please contact Amy Landers at http://us.mc582.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=landersamy@msn.com.
Quick note- Our first band booster meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria.  We are planning to have the Wildcat Winds perform a little something for us that night.
See you then.
