Spirit wear order form

Several parents said they did not get the Spirit Wear order forms from their students.  I am attaching a form, just in case you wanted to order.  I NEED the order form, with payment, no later than Tuesday for you to be able to get them before Christmas Break. If you want them as a present, please mark that on the form and I will call you to set a pick up time rather than giving it to your child at school.

Sincerely,

Barbara Smith
Band Booster Treasurer

Next 2 weeks in band - Nov 29th

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break.  Ours was busy, but at least we didn't wake up to alarm clocks.  Bliss!  One thing I did do with my oldest daughter was to go to the fall concert of the Armstrong Atlantic Youth Orchestra and the Lyric Youth Orchestra.  It was a fantastic evening of music and I was surprised to see how many of our students from Richmond Hill Middle School bands are members of this select group.  I was happy to recognize these students' names:

Maria Longoria- oboe
Cameron Brooks- clarinet
Emily Hollowell- clarinet
Darrin Williams- trumpet
Danny Park- violin I (he is a percussionist for the band)

If I missed anyone let me know.

This week in band the after school rehearsals will be at their normal time.  For those students auditioning for Honor Band this Saturday, please put the meeting time at the bandroom on Saturday morning as 10 a.m.  This is a tenetive time and I will be following up as Dr. Warnock receives our audition time information.

Next week we have 4 big happenings.  Tuesday, Dec. 7 all band students must report to the bandroom at 6p.m. for the Christmas Concert following the PTSO meeting at 6:30 in the Gym.  Wednesday, Dec. 8 is cookie dough pick up at the RHMS cafeteria from 3-5.  Thursday, Dec. 9 the Wildcat Winds will play a Christmas concert in the park with the High School band at JF Gregory.  The concert starts at 7p.m.  I am not sure of the report time.  We will also need some parent help to haul equiptment to the park and back.  Saturday, Dec. 11 the Wildcat Winds will be taking a program photo in their new concert uniforms.  Time is still TBD.  For all the concerts, all band students are asked to wear concert attire.

Your student should be coming home with a spiritwear order form today.  This is another band fundraiser.  If you would like any of these items for Christmas giving, please make sure your order is in by Friday, Dec. 3.  If interest is high, we may place more orders after Christmas.

Keep checking your emails for the latest information.  We are in the final 3 week stretch before another break.  Hang it there.  There will be NO Band Booster meeting this month.

This is to remind you that your cookie dough order forms and money were due Nov 15th (Monday).  With the orders that came in today we have met half of our fundraising goal.  If you did not turn in your order form, please do so tomorrow.

If you are not interested in selling cookie dough but would like to help us reach our goal to meet our expenses for the Large Group Performance Evaluations we are accepting donations.  Just put your check (made out to RHWBB) or cash in an envelope and mark it "Donation".

This week in Band - Nov 15th

Parents,
Monday is a busy day for the band.  This Monday, Nov. 15 is the day we are collecting the cookie dough order forms and money.  Please make sure your student brings the order form and money collected in the envelope provided.  Your student's name and grade should be prominently written on the outside of this envelope.

I will be in the library at 10a.m. on the 15th to put together the materials for the Hat Day fundraiser that the Wildcat Winds is sponsoring on the 19th.  If you can come and help from 10-11 or so that would be great.

The band will be having their regular practices this week EXCEPT for the Percussion Ensemble.  The Winds will be having a special practice on Friday from 3-5 after school and will be using the bandroom.  If your student is in Winds and you have not yet RSVP'd, we would appreciate a heads up either way.  The Boosters will provide a pizza snack for the students and we need to know how much pizza to order.

Thanks for your help.

Cookie Dough Sale Schedule

Hello RHMS Band Parents-
Our Cookie Dough Sale is finally underway! Good Luck selling. Now the even better part- we need to make final plans to receive the student orders on Nov. 15th and again for delivery of the cookie dough on Dec. 8th. Any help is appreciated. Please call or email us with your availability.
We need some help on Monday, Nov. 15th at the end of the school day. ( Around 5 parents would be ideal) Let us know if you are available, and then please plan to meet in the Band Room after school. We will need to sort orders by grade, open envelopes and verify that payments are included for each order. Any orders turned in earlier will already have been entered into the Great American POS ordering site in advance. Last, we need to enter the orders received on the 15th into the Great American POS web site to place our final order. Most likely the web work will be done by me that evening from my home. I imagine the sorting and opening of orders will take about an hour or two at the most.
On Wednesday, Dec. 8th the order will arrive "sometime" that morning ( I love specific information, don't you?) I will place a call to any available volunteers as soon as the order comes in. If you can be "on call" to help sort please let me know and send me your best contact phone number. We will need to assemble in the Lunch Room after lunch time is over ( around 1:30 pm) to sort the orders by grade. Pick-up will take place from 3-5:30 pm. With that said, if you can only help at the student /parent pick-up please plan to meet in the Lunch Room by 2:30 pm- we must finish deliveries/clean-up by 5:45 pm. Ideally, we will have 2 parents per grade to check off and hand off the orders. The orders are supposed to come in pre-grouped by seller to make our distribution part easier. Please email me at rjglassco@aol.com or call my cell at 344-8874 if you have questions.
Thanks, Cyndy Glasscock

Cookie Dough Sale Begins

Parents,
Your student will be coming home today with the order forms for our cookie dough sale.  Please ask your student for theirs.  Participation is voluntary, but the funds we raise are so necessary.
Just so you know.  The state of GA does not fund music education in our state.  The Bryan Co. Board of Education provides the funds in their budget for music teachers' salaries with little left for purchasing instruments, stands, music scores, etc.  We are lucky to have the support of Ms. Herndon who finds a way to help where she can and is very supportive of our fundraising efforts.  This is where the Cookie Dough Sale comes in.
Every year Dr. Warnock takes all 3 grade level bands to the Large Group Performance Evaluations sponsored by the Georgia Music Educators Association in the spring.  The school donates the transportation.  We must come up with the entrance fees and the money to cover the purchase of participation medals for every student.  This fundraiser pays for this event.  All the leftover monies are put back into the band program by purchasing instruments, stands, music, etc.  Our children gain so much when they watch other bands play and can perform in a more public venue themselves.  They have always made us proud with their performance and their conduct.
I hope you will decide to support our fundraising efforts.  A parent reminded me that donations directly to the band program are just as good.  We would appreciate either.
Thank you,
The Band Boosters

Wildcat Winds Fundraisers

Don't worry, this is great news!

I have arranged with Ms. Herndon that the Wildcat Winds will have 3 Hat Day fundraisers at school before the Atlanta trip in the spring.  Our first Hat Day is Nov 19, the last day of school before Thanksgiving.  The next two will be in Jan and Feb.

Do any of your families have small stickers you can donate to the Winds?  We need to assemble a zip lock baggie with stickers for each homeroom class at the MS.  The students who pay $1 to wear a hat will put the sticker on their hat to show they supported Hat Day with a donation.  I would also like to get a group of volunteers together on Monday Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. to assemble the baggies.  If you can donate your time or supplies that would be greatly appreciated.

Hat Days generate about $300 a shot for very little invested on our part.  Please support this fundraising effort.  It will make a difference in the cost of the Atlanta Trip.

Thank you,
Kiersten

Update Winds Parents

Winds Parents,

First of all, I wanted to let you know that the uniforms are expected to arrive this week.  I will distribute them to the students as soon as they arrive.  If you have a daughter in the band, please have her try on the dress with her black flats and hem the dress to the top of the foot without a break in the skirt.  We have a few moms from the band that can help with this or you may use a professional seamstress.

Doc has cancelled the Nov. 13 clinic but has scheduled an afterschool practice on the 19th from 3-5.  Please reply to this email if your student will participate since the Boosters will provide a pizza snack.  Thank you.

Finally, a student that lives in Richmond Place is in need of a ride home from Winds practice.  If you can help this family out, please reply to this email.

This is alot of information, but thanks for your time.

Cookie Dough Sale/Weekly Schedule

Parents,

We are assembling the cookie dough order forms after school today in the band room starting at 3 p.m.  Cyndy Glasscock, cookie dough fundraiser coordinator, is still looking for at least 2 volunteers from each grade level to assist with collecting and colating orders as well as passing out the cookie dough next month.  If you can help out please reply to this email.

Please be looking out for the order form to come home with your student tomorrow from school.  This is the fundraiser for the band every year and this is how we pay for the entrance fees to the Large Group Performance Evaluations in the spring.  Any left over money is put to the improvement of the band program at large.  Your support is appreciated.

The after school band schedule is on it's normal schedule this week.

Email from Dr. Warnock regarding the November clinic

Winds Parents,
Below is an email from Dr. Warnock regarding the November clinic, an additional practice on the 19th and a performance at the booster meeting on November 9th.  The boosters will be providing a snack of some kind for the Nov. 19th practice.  Please mark your calendars with all of these changes.

Kiersten Scooler

---------------------------------------------------
Hi Kiersten,

I have three things I wanted to share.

1.     I wanted to let you know that I would like to cancel the Saturday, November 13th rehearsal. Being that it’s a long weekend, the guest conductor doesn’t feel he needs to rehearse his piece, and also students are being reunited with returning military parents, I think we should just cancel it.

2.     So, I would like to have a rehearsal on Friday, November 19th, from 3:00 until 5:00. Maybe we could have pizza and soda/or water for the kids. It would give us a little more practice before the long Thanksgiving break. (We would also have our regular Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals that week.)

3.     I would like to have the wildcat winds perform on the booster meeting, Tuesday, November 9th. We have our bagpiper guest soloist coming down that day from Milledgeville, GA to rehearse with the band. This is a good opportunity to try and perform this piece and others early on so we can become better prepared for January.

Thanks,

Emery

Seafood Festival - Oct 16th (Saturday)

Winds Parents and Students,
Here is the most updated information about the Seafood Festival I have so far.

There will be no Winds practice on Thursday because of the Homecoming Street Dance at the Middle School.

We will have a trailer to transport all of the percussion equiptment and larger instruments over to JF Gregory park.  We will begin loading the equiptment on the trailer at the band room at 10:30 Saturday morning.  I am asking that all percussion students arrive at 10:30 to assist.  Students playing the larger brass instruments or other instruments stored at the school will please arrive at the band room by 11 to make sure your personal instrument is loaded on the trailer.  We will also be loading chairs.

All other Winds students are to meet at the stage at JF Gregory Park at 11:30.  All students are to wear their Winds t-shirt from this year with jeans.  Please bring a portable music stand and your music in the binder.  I will bring clothes pins in case of wind.  Last year the stage was located at the far end of the pavillion.  All students will help set up and tear down the stage and equiptment.  Many hands make light work.  The Winds are scheduled to play from 12:30 to 1.  We will need help back at the bandroom to unload the trailer as well about 1:30.

Unfortunately, all students will need to get themselves to and from the park.  Please be aware this is a busy event in Richmond Hill and you may need to allow for extra time to park and get to the venue.  There is a charge at the gate.  Parents must pay to enter, performers do not.  Please keep that in mind when leaving the park.  They will charge you to re-enter.  If you are able to stay, this may be the day to do it since you have already paid.

If you have a truck and could assist with loading the trailer and can carry any extra equiptment in your vehicle, please email me.

I am looking forward to hearing the Winds play.
Kiersten

Band Booster meeting - Oct 14th (Thursday)

Winds Update

Parents,
Sorry for the late notice.  Could you please have your son or daughter wear the Wildcat Winds tshirt they received at the beginning of this year to school and/or practice tomorrow?  The contest that Christina Smith entered to win the shirts is having a photo contest of the kids wearing the shirts.  The prize is $100 donated to the Winds program.  I hope you can help.

Next, Winds practice is cancelled for Thursday.  Doc and the eighth graders will be busy with the Homecoming parade.

Finally, the Winds will perform on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Seafood Festival in JF Gregory Park.  The performance time is around noon.  We will meet at the band room to load up the percussion equiptment and large instruments before that.  I will get a definate time for both from Doc.  We will not be providing transportation to the park.  Those students attending will need to be transported by their parents.

This should bring us up to date for this week.  If you are still interested in attending the GMEA concert in January, please email me by tomorrow at 8a.m.  Thank you.

What's Up in Band 9/27 to 10/1

Parents,

Attached are the minutes from our Band Booster meeting in September.  Please read over the minutes for the latest information.  Our next meeting is October 14 at 7 p.m. in the bandroom.

This week is a little different than usual due to Homecoming at the High School.  Please read it over carefully.

Monday- 3-4:30 Practice for all 8th graders wanting to march with the HS marching band in the Homecoming parade on Thursday.  Regular tutoring is cancelled for this week only.
Tuesday- 3-5 Winds practice
Wednesday- 3-4:30 Pep Band practice
Thursday- 3-5 Winds practice.  Please check back through the week as Thursday approaches to see if anything changes with this.  Eighth graders marching in the parade will be reporting to the parade start around 5:30.  I will update you on the definate meeting place and time as that information is made available to me.  The parade starts at 6p.m. on Timber Trail at the Rec Center.  It proceeds down Timber Trail to Harris Trail and then ends at the High School.  Parents can watch the parade on both sides of Timber Trail, or just on the school side of Harris Trail.  Details were published in the last Bryan County Now.
Friday-  Eighth graders at the Football game with the marching band?  TBD

If you have an eighth grader I hope you let them participate in the parade with the High School band.  I was a wonderful experience for my daughter and her friends last year.  It went a long way to encouraging these kids to stick with band in high school.

Lastly, if you have emailed me in the afternoon and not gotten a response in the same day it is because I read emails for band in the morning.  My schedule is too crazy in the evening to add band business to it.  I hope you understand.  Please, please, please, call me at home 727-2710 or on my cell 332-6148 if you need an immediate answer about a performance or practice.  I am happy to answer your questions, I'm just not at my computer.

I will be updating this schedule as the week goes on.  What a week it will be.

Kiersten

Atlanta Trip Spring 2011

Parents,

I'm truly not trying to drive you nuts, but I wanted to put forward an opportunity from the Booster Officers.

For the last 3 or 4 years the Wildcat Winds have performed at the Dixie Classic Festival in Atlanta the spring.  This is a wonderful event, but is also our costliest event during the school year.  Last year this trip cost over $100 per student.  We broke the payments into 2 installments.

This year, Booster officers would like to offer that if you would like to start paying on the Atlanta trip beginning in October, we will be setting up a spreadsheet to keep track of your payments and "account" balance.  If you paid $20/month from now until February (this is when many of the final payments come due), your students trip would be nearly paid off.  As the actual cost of the trip comes into focus we will inform you of the balance due.

This is absolutely voluntary.  We just thought breaking the payments into more manageable chunks would be helpful for many families.  If you choose to participate you will receive a statement of total payments received monthly. We will not send you a "bill" every month.  You can pay as you are able.  As stated above, we won't have a final balance due until the details of hotel expense, etc. can be determined.

Again, participation in this payment plan is entirely up to you.  Only you know what works best for your family.  Should you choose to participate, please put your payment in an envelope marked with your student's name and "Atlanta Trip".  By October 1 we should have a payment drop box in Doc's office for all money collection.

Thank you for your time,

Kiersten

From the desk of Dr. Warnock

Winds Parents,

Dr. Warnock wanted me to give you a heads up on a few things.

First, Mrs. Herndon and Mr. Oliver have asked that the Winds play at the BOE meeting this Thursday, Sept. 23.  Winds practice on Thursday will go until 4:30.  You may pick your child up then so they can eat dinner and change and then report back to the bandroom at 5:50.  Since we don't have uniforms yet, could you please have your child wear the standard band uniform of white dress shirt, black dress pants and black dress shoes?  If you do not have these specific items, please come dressed as close to this as possible.  Please, just no t-shirts, jeans or tennis shoes.  The Winds will perform from 6:15 until 6:30 at the BOE meeting and then they will be released to go home.  Thank you for making the effort to make this performance.

Second,  Doc needs a list of interested parents who wish to attend  the GMEA conference performance at the end of January.  We need you to respond whether you are willing to chaperone OR just attend the performance.  It costs nothing to go to the concert, but you will need a pass to attend.  This event occurs during the school day on Thursday, January 27, 2011.  The students will leave RHMS at about 8 a.m., perform at 11:15, eat lunch and return back to school by the end of the school day.  If you are interested in attending and/or chaperoning, could you please email me at this address by next Friday, Sept. 24?

Lastly is something for your consideration.  Dr. Warnock has tenetively scheduled a clinician to work with the band on Sat. Nov 13 from 9-1.  That is the Saturday of the long Veteran's Day weekend.  I would like to get your feedback on whether your student will even be available to participate that day before we make a final decision.

Thank you,
Kiersten

Honor Band/ All-State Band

Parents,

One final reminder:  If your student wishes to audition for District I Honor Band/All-State band on December 4, 2010 they need to sign up with Dr. Warnock and pay the audition fee by this Friday, Sept. 17.  Please send your payment in an envelope marked with "Honor Band" or "Honor Band/All-State".

This is a voluntary audition.  The auditions for both Honor Band and the first-round audition for All-State Band is done at the same time on Dec. 4.  The cost for only Honor Band consideration is $5.  If your student wishes to be considered for All-State as well, the fee is $23 total.  Should your student be selected for the second round of All-State auditions, there will be an additional fee for that audition.  Those auditions will be held at the beginning of January and that money will be collected then (amount TBD).

The Honor Band performs at AASU in February.  The students that make Honor band have a 3 day experience of practicing with other top students in District I under a guest conductor.  After three days of practice, they put on a performance at AASU for their parents and educators.  It was a great concert last year.  I assume All-State runs much the same way, just at the state level.  I do not know where those concerts are.  I believe they take place sometime in March.

I know this is alot of information, but I hope it was helpful.

Parents,

Thank you to all of you who attended the meeting on Thursday.  We will be posting the minutes from that meeting soon.

A special "thank you" to Kevin and Kim Caleca.  Kevin has been reshaping and repainting the music stands in the bandroom.  I can't tell the difference between the stands Kevin has refurbished and the new ones that just arrived.  Kim schlepps those stands to and from every Friday and Monday.  Your hard work is so appreciated.  I'm so sorry I forgot to mention your efforts at the meeting.

All students that are interested in auditioning for District I Honor/All-State band need to sign up ASAP with Dr. Warnock and pay the corresponding audition fee.  Auditions will be held on December 4, 2010 (location TBD).  If your student is ONLY auditioning for the Honor Band the fee is $5.  If your student is auditioning for Honor & All-State Band their audition fee is $23.  Please put cash payment in an envelope labeled with your students name and what it is for.  Please make checks payable to RHWBB.

Attention Parents,

Tomorrow night will be our first Band Booster meeting of the 2010-2011 school year.  It will begin at 7 p.m. in the bandroom.  Please plan to attend.  We will be electing officers, sharing our budget and planning fundraising.  This is a very important meeting and I hope you all can come.  The Wildcat Winds will not be performing as they are not prepared yet.

RHMS Band Info

Parents,
If you are trying to hunt down the pieces to your child's uniform one parent has had luck on the Land's End website.  They have black skirts/pants and collared shirts for girls (which can be hard to track down).  I know they have items for boys as well.  Just wanted to pass on the information.
The Pep band will be playing at the middle school football game this Wednesday 9/1 after school.  Please have your student wear their pep band shirt from last year with jeans/jean walking shorts.  If your student doesn't have a pep band shirt yet, please have them wear a school appropriate black, gold or white tshirt.   We are still in the process of collecting money ($10) and getting the shirts made for this year.  Your child will be provided an afterschool snack and will need to be picked up at 6:30.  If you can help donate snack or chaperone the band please contact Amy Landers at http://us.mc582.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=landersamy@msn.com.
Quick note- Our first band booster meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria.  We are planning to have the Wildcat Winds perform a little something for us that night.
See you then.
